8.18.2008 One Right Turn played their first show on the US Mainland
Honolulu, Hawaii based One Right Turn (ORT) played their first show on the US Mainland at Stern Grove in San Francisco, California to over 10,000 people this past Sunday, August 10th. One Right Turn is comprised of Sisters Connie Cruz and Tiffa Cruz-Garza along with Tiffa's husband Imua Garza, formerly of the successful Island Rhythm group Opihi Pickers. One Right Turn's 30 minute set received lively audience response as they introduced the near capacity crowd to original songs from the four upcoming ORT CD's.

"One Right Turn" - "Lean On My Shoulder" / "Connie" / "Tiffa" / "Imua" and a box set of all four CD's called "Ohana" will be in stores and online Tuesday, October 14th. "Imua, Connie & Tiffa have unique voices and styles of their own that when combined produce a fourth unique style, so we decided to release a group CD along with a solo CD by each member simultaneously." "I don't know of any other group having attempted this before, but with over 250 originals between the three members and the fun they were having in the studio it just made sense." - Warren Wyatt, President, WorldSound

One Right Turn further wowed the Bay area crowd when they were joined on stage by famed Hawaiian singer-songwriter and brother / brother in law Ernie Cruz Jr. ORT was performing at Stern Grove in San Francisco as part of "One Hawaii" a historic gathering of groups from Hawaii that included Ernie Cruz & Kaukahi and was headlined by Na Leo Pilimehana.

6.20.2008 Na Leo still going strong after decades on stage
WITH SO many local recording artists struggling for success, it's comforting to know some industry veterans are able to change with the times and still make a profit.

The Brothers Cazimero are a good example. Robert and Roland accepted a lifetime achievement award this week at the 31st annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, but they aren't just sitting back and relaxing after more than three decades in the game. They just released a new album, "Destiny," and Robert starred in a recent documentary about his role as kumu hula with Halau Na Kamalei (check out my blog for a video interview with the Cazimeros).

Na Leo is another group with no plans to retire anytime soon. After signing a distribution deal with Koch, the ladies are set to release their 19th studio album next week.

"E Hula Mai Kakou" is due in stores (and iTunes) on Tuesday. The release marks the start of Na Leo's 25th anniversary celebration, which lasts until August 2009 and includes their most extensive U.S. mainland tour to date.

With help from producer Shawn Pimental, the ladies have produced an instant classic for hula halau around the world. "E Hula Mai Kakou" features a number of original compositions, plus new material written by Puakea Nogelmeier, Violet Hughes and Kahauanu Lake.

Na Leo will head for the mainland next week, with a pair of concerts scheduled in San Diego with Keali'i Reichel and Weldon Kekauoha before moving on to Los Angeles, Seattle and Las Vegas for the Fourth of July weekend. They'll be joined in Seattle and Vegas by Reichel, Ernie Cruz Jr. and Kaukahi.

6.13.2008 Na Leo's new Album E Hula Mai Kakou
Na Leo's new album Available Exclusively on iTunes

The Quote "Hula is the language of the heart, and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people," attributed to King David Kalakaua, captures the essence of Na Leo's latest recording as the trio returns to their original roots in Hawaiian music, presenting classic hula songs of yesteryear, along with brand-new originals.

Listeners will be transported to a simpler time and place as Na Leo is accompanied by some of the best musicians of Hawaii's past and present such as Walter Kawaiaea, Shawn Ishimoto and Aron Sala.

Several classic hula songs have been revitalized in this project: Relax in the hospitality of the Waterhouse estate on Kaua'i in Kipukai; Immerse yourself in the intoxicating scent of Pua Tuberose; Experience the vast beauty and majesty of the southernmost point of the United States as you journey along in Ka nani a'o Ka'u; Feel the power of a fathers love in the endearing composition Pua Mae'ole; smell the sea breeze and listen to the gentle call of the ocean in Pupu Hinuhinu; and hear the swish and watch the sway of cellophane skirts in our tribute to the 1940s in Do the Hula.

4.23.2008 Kaukahi lends a hand and a heart
The members of musical group Kaukahi were eager to swing hammers, turn some screws and saw some wood.

The four musicians and friends traveled to Waianae to volunteer their services at Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu's latest project. Problem was, there was no physical work to be done on the January day they set aside to build.

So instead guitarist/vocalist Kawika Kahiapo and ukeleleist/vocalist Walt Keale, who are both pastors, led a blessing of the site of the future home for the Dung family.

"We expected to get in our scrubs and do something that day," Kahiapo says. "But we did the blessing, shared a couple of songs, got to know the family."
